The Process

Our Simple 3 Step Process

Free measure, quote and design

We come to your block, measure the site and talk through what you want the wall to do, whether that is levelling a slope, holding a driveway or tidying a garden bed. We assess the height, the load above the wall, the soil and the drainage the site will need, then give you a fixed, itemised quote. If the wall calls for engineering, for example it is over about a metre or carries a surcharge, we let you know and can arrange or advise on the engineer and certifier so it is designed to AS4678 and approved before we build.

Excavate, build and drain

With the design and any approvals sorted, we excavate the wall line, set the footings and build the wall to the engineered design where one applies. The part that never gets skipped is drainage: we run an agi-drain along the base behind the wall, backfill with free-draining aggregate, wrap the drainage zone in geofabric to keep soil fines out, and form weep holes where appropriate. That system carries water away and relieves the hydrostatic pressure that would otherwise push against the wall and cause it to bulge or lean over time.

Backfill, compact and finish

Once the wall and its drainage are in, we backfill in layers and compact as we go so the ground behind is stable and settles evenly rather than slumping later. We tidy the site, remove our spoil and leave you with a clean, level result ready for your yard, driveway or garden. We walk you through what has been built and how the drainage works, so you understand the wall you now have. The finish is solid, well drained and built to last.

Why does drainage matter so much on a retaining wall?

Because trapped water behind a wall is the single most common cause of retaining-wall failure. A wall is designed to hold back soil, but when water builds up behind it with nowhere to escape, it creates hydrostatic pressure that pushes on the structure and can make it bulge, lean or crack. On every wall we install an agi-drain at the base, free-draining aggregate backfill, geofabric to stop the drain clogging, and weep holes to relieve pressure, which is the real difference between a wall that stands and one that fails.

Which retaining wall material is best?

There is no single best material, only the right one for your block, the wall height, the load and your budget. Concrete sleeper on galvanised steel H-posts is the most common all-rounder, being cost-effective, strong and durable. Timber sleeper is cheaper and has a natural look, but it is not permanent and will eventually need replacing, so we are upfront about that trade-off. Besser and concrete block is strong and rendered but needs a proper footing and steel reinforcement; sandstone and stone is premium and characterful; and gabion baskets are free-draining and modern.
