We come to your block, measure the site and talk through what you want the wall to do, whether that is levelling a slope, holding a driveway or tidying a garden bed. It is shorter-lived than concrete or block, and we will always be upfront about that. Treated H4 timber is rated for in-ground use, but no timber is permanent - it will eventually rot and the wall will need replacing down the track. It can be for lower garden and terracing work, but for taller structural retaining on a steep block running down to the lake we would usually recommend concrete sleeper or block instead. Sloping lakeside blocks around Belmont and Toronto shed a lot of runoff, so drainage matters even more, and the loads on a taller wall are better carried by a longer-lasting system. Because water is what fails retaining walls, timber included. Trapped water builds hydrostatic pressure behind the wall, which is the number-one cause of failure regardless of the material. Behind every timber wall we install an agi-drain, free-draining aggregate and geofabric so water flows away rather than pushing on the sleepers. Keeping water moving also keeps it off the timber, which helps the wall reach the best lifespan it reasonably can.
H4 is a timber treatment level rated for in-ground contact, where the sleeper is exposed to soil and moisture, so it is the appropriate grade for retaining work. Using a lower treatment level for a retaining wall would see the timber fail far sooner. H4 slows the decay but does not stop it forever, which is why we are honest that even H4 timber is not permanent. It is the right specification for a timber retaining wall, paired with proper drainage to give it the best chance.
The same general rules apply as for any retaining wall. As a guide, walls over roughly a metre, walls carrying a surcharge such as a driveway above, or walls near a boundary usually need an engineering design to AS4678 and often council approval or a Complying Development Certificate through a certifier. The engineer designs the wall and the council or certifier approves it - we build to that design.
